Coastal First Steps -- Parents of Newborns Program

A Loving Volunteer Opportunity

We, at First Steps, always admire individuals in the community who take time out of their busy lives to volunteer.  Our parent coaches are an exceptional team who support new parents through a major life event -- the birth of a new child.  We would certainly love to have you join our team.

Becoming a First Steps parent coach is a unique experience.  Why? After the initial training is completed, you set your own schedule of activity.  Remember that babies are born 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so any time that you can conduct your parent visits is the right time.  And the follow-up phone calls can be done from your place of business, on your lunch hour, the comfort of your own home, or you are welcome to come into our offices.

And no other volunteer opportunity allows you to experience the joy of fresh babies -- just out of the oven.  Do you remember that wonderful experience of walking into a bakery when the bread had just finished baking?  That wonderful smell?  That wonderful feeling of home and family?  New babies have that wonderful, magical effect, too.  And all new parents can benefit from the emotional support and encouragement you're offering.  But sorry, folks.  No, you do not get to cuddle and hold the babies.  We would certainly hate for a new infant or a new mom to pick up any germs or illnesses so holding the babies is a no-no.  But nothing stops you from gazing into their angelic faces, cooing over their peaceful slumber, hearing the parents' name choices, and o-o h-h-h that new baby smell!  Read on. . .

How do I become a volunteer?

1.                  Complete a volunteer application and meet with the Program Coordinator.

2.                  Attend volunteer training that includes classroom instruction (3 hrs.), hospital orientation (1 hr.), and practical training (practicing visits, phone calls, etc.)

3.                  Go to Occupational Health for a TB test. (This is free)

4.                  Return to Occupation Health in 2-3 days to have TB test read. (Please note: You may have to have another test 1-3 weeks later if you have not been tested in the past year.)

5.                   Submit to a Criminal Background Check.
6.
Go to Human Resources to have a name badge made.

7.                  Shadow a staff person visiting a new mom.

8.                  Visit new moms.

What do volunteers do?

1.                  Visit with new families one day per month at Candler Hospital and initiate a nurturing relationship. Each visit with a mom/family takes 15 to 30 minutes.

2.                  Call moms at home on the telephone at least two times per month for a minimum of three months.

3.                  Provide emotional support, parenting education, and community referrals to the new moms and their families.

4.                  Complete paperwork after each contact.

5.                  Attend monthly in service volunteer meetings. You are required to have three more hours of in service training during the year.

6.                  Tell people you are a First Steps volunteer and encourage them to volunteer, too.

What kind of qualities do I need as a volunteer?

1.         Warm, natural, comfortable in a hospital setting

2.         Ability to accept differences in a non-judgmental way

3.         Ability to listen and share

4.         Understand the necessity of maintaining confidentiality

5.         Willingness to make a 1 year commitment to the program

6.         Agreement to have a background check and TB test. TB test is required annually.

Do I need to have special training?

All training and materials are provided for you.  The First Steps program requires 12 hours of training obtained through:

3 hours             Volunteer Training

1 hour              Hospital Orientation – usually combined with Volunteer Training

5 hours             TB test/Name badge/Shadow visits and follow-up calls

How often do you have volunteer training?

Volunteer training is held as needed throughout the year, usually on a monthly basis. Check our schedule of events page for the next volunteer training opportunity.

Do I have to be a parent in order to volunteer?
You do not have to be a parent in order to volunteer. You probably know people who are parents. You may have experiences with nieces, nephews, and friends’ children. Regardless of whether you have children or not, you can still play an important role in preventing child abuse and neglect.
